TikTok Sues US Government Over Potential Ban

TikTok is suing the US government over a new law that will ban the application from the US if the app's parent company ByteDance does not divest the popular social media app.

This lawsuit marks the first legal challenge to the bill that was approved by the US Senate in April and signed into legislation by US President Joe Biden as part of a Ukraine-Israel aid package.

TikTok has explained that the potential ban will inhibit free speech and negatively impact creators and small businesses, which violates the rights granted to these groups by the First Amendment of the US Constitution.

The TikTok company shared that it had spent over $1.5 billion to isolate its US operations and agreed to oversight by the American company Oracle, according to a report in Bloomberg.

Since the company claimed that the new law is very unconstitutional, sponsors of the Protecting Americans From Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act are portraying the law as a regulation of TikTok's ownership instead of accepting that it is a ban.

According to the new legislation, ByteDance has nine months to sell the platform, however, the company revealed that they will not be selling the popular social media app, according to Associated Press.

The new legislation will force a shutdown of TikTok in the US by Jan. 19, 2025.
