Abu Dhabi drivers, here’s your reminder to ease off the gas — because repeat traffic offenders are now facing serious consequences.
In a new update shared on Abu Dhabi Police’s “Safety and Security” Programme, Lt. Col. Saeed Khalfan Al Kaabi from the Traffic Points Program Department broke down what happens when motorists hit the dreaded 24 traffic points mark — especially for younger drivers.
Probationary licence? Here’s the deal
If you’re under 21 and manage to collect 24 traffic points, your licence will be suspended for six months.
You can get it back by paying a Dh2,400 fine and completing a one-day rehabilitation course.
But here’s the catch: if you hit 24 points again, your licence gets revoked completely. You’ll have to wait a full year before applying for a new one.
For drivers with permanent licences
Those aged 21 and above aren’t off the hook either. Once you reach 24 points, you’ll face:
-
A three-month suspension, or
-
The option to pay Dh2,400 and attend a rehabilitation course.
If it happens again within a year, your suspension doubles to six months, and yes — you’ll still need to pay and attend the course.
How the traffic points system works
Traffic points are issued for serious violations, and they stay on your record for a full year. If your total never reaches 24, the points reset after that period.
Some offences carry heavier penalties — running a red light adds 12 points, while endangering your life or others racks up 23 points.
Lt. Col. Al Kaabi urged drivers to take the rules seriously, saying that even one reckless mistake could cost more than just fines.
