Trump to Host Maria Machado at the White House This Week

U.S. President Donald Trump will host Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado at the White House on Thursday, a senior White House official confirmed on Monday, marking a high-profile diplomatic engagement amid the ongoing political crisis in Venezuela.

The meeting in Washington comes weeks after a U.S. military operation led to the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, who were transported to the United States to face charges, highlighting the intensifying role of the United States in Venezuelan affairs.

Machado, the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize winner and a leading figure in Venezuela’s opposition movement, gained international recognition for her longstanding efforts to challenge authoritarian rule in her country. Despite her prominence, Trump has previously declined to endorse her as Venezuela’s leader, citing concerns that she “doesn’t have the support within, or the respect within, the country.”

The Trump administration’s engagement with Machado reflects broader U.S. foreign policy interests in Venezuela following the ousting of Maduro, whose government was widely criticised for corruption, economic collapse and human rights abuses. Washington has signalled support for a democratic transition in Venezuela, even as Trump’s approach has drawn scrutiny from international observers.

In addition to political discussions, the meeting may touch on economic and security topics including Venezuela’s vast oil reserves and future governance. Machado has praised U.S. actions against Maduro, while Trump has emphasised the importance of a “safe, proper and judicious transition” in Venezuela’s leadership — a process he has indicated the United States would guide during an interim period.

The White House has not yet released further details about the agenda or outcomes expected from the session, but the engagement underscores ongoing diplomatic efforts amid a period of heightened tension and uncertainty in Venezuela’s political landscape.
