A Sneak Peek at Dubai’s Aerial Taxi Design

The Museum of the Future, in collaboration with Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), has unveiled an exciting new prototype of the aerial taxi, developed by Joby Aviation. This futuristic project aims to transform urban mobility in Dubai, bringing smart, sustainable, and eco-friendly transportation to the city.

A Step Towards Dubai's Vision for Smart Mobility

Exhibited on the Tomorrow, Today floor at the Museum of the Future, the aerial taxi prototype showcases Dubai’s commitment to leading the way in sustainable and smart transportation solutions. The initiative is a key part of the Dubai Self-Driving Strategy, which aims to achieve 25% self-driving trips by 2030.

The aerial taxi project is not just about innovation for the sake of innovation—it’s about creating a cleaner, more efficient way to travel. The electric-powered vehicle is designed to reduce carbon emissions, supporting global sustainability objectives, while offering passengers a fast and safe way to get around the city.

The Aerial Taxi: A Game-Changer for Urban Mobility

Khaled Al Awadhi, Director of Transportation Systems at RTA’s Public Transport Agency, spoke about the significance of this project: “We are honoured to showcase the aerial taxi model at the Museum of the Future. It reflects Dubai's ambition to redefine mobility and marks the beginning of a transformative era in urban transport. Dubai will be the first city in the world to launch this service, with plans to roll it out in the first quarter of 2026.”

The aerial taxi stands out thanks to its vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) capabilities. This means it doesn’t need traditional runways—just a small, designated area known as a “vertiport.” In addition to its futuristic design, the aerial taxi adheres to the highest safety and security standards to ensure passengers are well taken care of.

A Sustainable and High-Tech Innovation

The Joby S4 aerial taxi is a marvel of modern engineering, combining cutting-edge electric aviation technology with zero-emissions sustainability. It features six rotors, four battery packs, and can carry up to four passengers plus a pilot. With a range of up to 161 kilometres and a maximum speed of 322 km/h, it offers a quieter, more efficient alternative to traditional helicopters.

Not only does the aerial taxi aim to reduce carbon emissions, but it will also offer passengers an unparalleled travel experience. For example, a trip from Dubai International Airport to Palm Jumeirah will take just 12 minutes, compared to 45 minutes by car. This service will drastically reduce travel time across the city, making it easier than ever to get around.

Enhancing Connectivity Across Dubai

The introduction of the aerial taxi will integrate seamlessly with Dubai’s existing public transportation systems, such as the metro, buses, and taxis. It will also connect with individual mobility solutions like e-scooters and bicycles, creating a more cohesive and efficient transportation network.

The vertiport will be a key part of this project, with the capacity to handle 42,000 landings annually and serve up to 170,000 passengers. Developed in partnership with international operators, the station will feature state-of-the-art facilities designed to meet the highest global safety standards.

A Collaborative Effort to Revolutionize Travel

This groundbreaking project is the result of a collaboration between RTA, Joby Aviation, and Skyports Infrastructure. Joby Aviation will manage vehicle operations and passenger logistics, while Skyports will be in charge of designing and building the vertiports. RTA will ensure the service is seamlessly integrated into Dubai’s broader transportation network.

“We are excited to bring our electric air taxi to the public,” said Anthony Khoury, UAE General Manager of Joby. “Through this exhibit at the Museum of the Future, we’re showing Dubai residents and visitors what the future of clean, quiet, and efficient air travel could look like. We can’t wait to invite everyone to experience the future of mobility.”
