The manufacturer confirmed that selected lines of juices, flavored milks, flavored yoghurt, and laban will undergo adjustments to reduce added sugar levels by between 10 and 20 percent. These modified products are scheduled to arrive on supermarket shelves prior to the start of the school term in September.

Aligning with National Health Goals

This strategic adjustment aligns directly with Abu Dhabi’s Healthy Living Strategy, a comprehensive plan designed to combat chronic conditions such as obesity, diabetes, and other lifestyle-related ailments. Rather than relying exclusively on individual consumer choices, the initiative emphasizes creating an environment where nutritious options are more accessible. By collaborating with major food manufacturers, supermarkets, and digital platforms, authorities aim to elevate the baseline nutritional quality of everyday foods available to residents.

The reformulation specifically targets added sugars while leaving naturally occurring sugars inherent in ingredients like fresh fruit and dairy untouched. To maintain product integrity, the revised recipes exclude artificial sweeteners entirely. Packaging updates will explicitly highlight the reduced sugar content to inform shoppers.

Internal testing conducted by the company indicated that consumers unable to detect differences between the original and new formulas, ensuring continuity in flavor despite the compositional change. Given the high consumption rate of these items among families throughout the UAE, officials anticipate that even modest reductions per unit could yield cumulative positive effects on public health over time.

Health authorities view this partnership as a precedent for broader industry participation. Representatives from the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi have encouraged other entities to follow suit, noting that several additional manufacturers are currently engaging in discussions regarding comparable commitments.
