A reckless driver in Dubai learned the hard way that emergency lanes aren’t shortcuts. After a viral video surfaced showing a man speeding down the right shoulder to bypass a traffic jam, Dubai Police swiftly arrested him and impounded the vehicle.

The driver’s decision to illegally overtake vehicles using the emergency shoulder—meant strictly for ambulances, breakdowns, and urgent situations—has cost him a Dh50,000 fine, in line with Decree No. (30) of 2023.

🚨 Here’s the law:

The yellow-lined road shoulders are not free lanes for impatient drivers. They're reserved for emergencies only, like assisting the injured or clearing the road after breakdowns.

Dubai’s new 2024 traffic law introduced a wave of strict penalties to curb unsafe driving habits. These include fines, vehicle seizures, and 14-day impoundments for violations such as:

  • Overtaking from the shoulder
  • Tailgating
  • Distracted driving (yes, that includes texting)
  • Sudden swerves
  • Reversing dangerously
  • Lane cutting
  • Blocking traffic
  • Driving without plates
  • Changing your car’s color without permission

Vehicles seized under these violations will only be released after paying hefty fines—up to Dh50,000 depending on the offense.

The Dubai Police didn’t hold back: “Stopping the vehicle on the shoulder of the road in non-emergency situations, or overtaking vehicles from the shoulder” is a punishable offense, and the fine isn't optional.

So the next time you're tempted to speed down the shoulder in traffic—don't. It could cost you more than just side-eye from fellow drivers.
