DP World Reveals Dubai Food District, a Mega Hub for Global Food Trade

Dubai is getting serious about food—and business. DP World has officially unveiled the Dubai Food District, a major expansion of the Al Aweer Central Fruit and Vegetable Market that’s set to turn the area into one of the world’s largest integrated food trade hubs.

Think bigger, smarter, and way more connected.

From Local Market to Global Food Hub

The project will more than double the current market’s size, expanding it into a 29 million square foot, multi-category food district. The goal? Bring trading, storage, processing, and distribution under one roof—and make food supply chains faster and more resilient.

Once complete, the district will handle everything from fresh produce to dairy, gourmet items, staples, and specialty foods.

What’s Inside the Dubai Food District

This won’t be your average wholesale market. Plans include:

  • Cold storage and temperature-controlled warehouses

  • Primary and secondary food processing facilities

  • Digital back-office systems for traders

  • Cash-and-carry services

  • A gourmet food hall for businesses and shoppers

In short: from farm to shelf, all in one place.

Timeline and Big Picture

The project was first announced in July 2024 by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. Construction will roll out in phases, with the first phase set to begin in 2027.

DP World says the district will help farmers, producers, and traders reach global markets faster, while also supporting regional food security and Dubai’s long-term economic strategy.

With global food demand rising and supply chains under pressure, the Dubai Food District is being positioned as a future-proof solution—and a major flex for Dubai’s role in global trade.
