Dubai Plans to be the World's Most Bike-Friendly City by 2040

Dubai has recently announced an ambitious cycling masterplan, "Dubai Cycle City 2040," aiming to transform the city into a leading bike-friendly metropolis, surpassing renowned cycling cities like Amsterdam and Copenhagen. Proposed by URB, the comprehensive plan includes the groundbreaking 93-kilometer cycling highway known as “The Loop.”

Strategic Urban Development

The visionary plan intends to reshape the daily commute, promoting cycling and walking as key modes of transport to essential services within minutes. As the city anticipates a population surge by 2040, this initiative aligns with Dubai's commitment to sustainability and green mobility, already evident in the adoption of electric vehicles by Dubai Police and taxi fleets.

Key Infrastructure

The centerpiece of the masterplan is The Loop, a 93-kilometer climate-controlled highway. This project aims to provide a healthy mode of transport, granting access to key services through walking and cycling within minutes. The proposed infrastructure includes urban agriculture, social spaces, and various amenities for neighborhoods.

Connectivity Across Key Areas

The Loop is strategically designed to connect important areas such as DIFC, Downtown, Business Bay, Dubai Marina, Expo City, and more, totaling over 1,000 km in cycling infrastructure—surpassing the lengths in Amsterdam and Copenhagen.

Environmental Considerations

With a focus on sustainability, The Loop plans to operate on 100% renewable energy using kinetic power, implement a zero-emission transport system, and utilize 100% recycled water for irrigation.
