57 Road Projects Underway to Ease Dubai Traffic

Dubai is going all-in on transforming its road network, 57 major projects are already in motion to make daily commutes smoother and faster for everyone. The plan is part of a massive push to ease traffic congestion and get the city ready for a population expected to hit 8 million by 2040.

Launched under the supervision of Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of The Executive Council, these roadworks are being carried out by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and are expected to be completed by 2027.

We’re talking 226 kilometers of new roads and 115 bridges and tunnels across key parts of the city, projects that are already showing real promise in slashing travel times by more than 75% in some areas.

Major Upgrades You Should Know About

Umm Suqeim–Al Qudra Corridor

This 16-km corridor upgrade is one of the largest projects, with 7,000 meters of bridges and tunnels. Once done, it’ll cut commute times from 46 minutes to just 11. Over a million people will benefit from this, and phase one is already 50% complete.

Hessa Street Expansion

Hessa Street is getting a huge capacity boost. The road will go from handling 4,000 vehicles an hour to 8,000, thanks to 9,000 meters of bridges over four major intersections. Travel time will drop from 30 minutes to 7 minutes. The upgrade also includes a 13.5-km track for cyclists and e-scooters, complete with iconic bridges over Sheikh Zayed and Al Khail Roads.

Al Fay Road Corridor

This project aims to handle an extra 64,400 vehicles per hour with 12,900 meters of road and 13,500 meters of bridges. About 600,000 residents stand to gain from the five upgraded intersections.

Fast Relief Already Happening on Sheikh Zayed Road

Dubai rolled out seven quick-fix traffic initiatives on Sheikh Zayed Road earlier this year. Thanks to smarter tolling systems and parking updates, traffic volumes dropped by up to 10%, and more people started using public transport. Not bad for a few months’ work.

How Tech Is Speeding Things Up

Dubai is using AI monitoring, drones, and time-lapse imaging to make sure these projects stay on track. These smart tools have doubled the speed of site supervision, reduced survey time by 60%, and cut delays by 20% by flagging issues early.

Big Moves for Cyclists Too

It’s not just about cars... Dubai has built 557 kilometers of cycling tracks so far, with 100 kilometers under construction and another 185 kilometers in the pipeline. In 2024 alone, 47 million cycling trips were recorded, proving more people are choosing greener, healthier ways to get around.
