Jebel Jais Temporarily Closes After Heavy Rains, All Activities Suspended

Authorities in Ras Al Khaimah have temporarily closed Jebel Jais and suspended all activities following heavy rainfall that affected the area between December 17 and 19, prompting safety assessments and essential maintenance work.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, officials said recent rain led to standing water across parts of the UAE’s highest mountain, requiring targeted inspections to ensure visitor safety. As a precaution, temporary road closures have been implemented, and all operations will remain suspended until further notice while specialist teams carry out safety assessments.

All attractions affected

The temporary closure impacts all major attractions and facilities at Jebel Jais, including:

  • Jais Flight Zipline

  • 1484 by Puro

  • Red Rock BBQ

  • Via Ferrata

  • Bear Grylls Explorers Camp

  • Yoga sessions at Jais Viewing Deck Park

Officials acknowledged that winter is traditionally the peak season for Jebel Jais but stressed that the decision was taken with visitor wellbeing as the top priority.

Safety warnings issued

Visitors have been advised not to camp in wadis during the current period of unsettled weather. Authorities also warned that standing water could cause shifting rocks and slippery paths. While hiking and climbing areas have not been formally closed, specialised teams are assessing conditions, and visitors are urged to exercise caution and avoid affected routes.

The closure follows a spell of unstable weather across the UAE, with heavy rain and thunderstorms reported in multiple emirates. The National Centre of Meteorology said the main rainfall system has passed, though cooler temperatures and intermittent showers may continue.

Phased reopening planned

Officials confirmed that reopening will take place in phases, with each area assessed individually before activities resume. Updates will be shared through official Jebel Jais channels as maintenance work progresses.

Donald Bremner, CEO of Marjan Lifestyle, said safety considerations were central to the decision to temporarily close operations, adding that a phased reopening approach would help ensure visitor safety.

Part of the Hajar mountain range in Ras Al Khaimah, Jebel Jais rises 1,934 metres above sea level, making it the highest peak in the UAE. The mountain is home to the world’s longest zipline and remains one of the country’s most popular destinations for adventure tourism and outdoor recreation.
