The death toll from the massive shopping mall fire in Karachi has climbed to 67, with 77 people still unaccounted for as rescue teams enter the final phase of search operations.

The blaze tore through Gul Plaza, a large commercial mall in the city’s busy business district, and took more than 24 hours to fully put out.

Search Operations in Final Stage

Local officials say the search and rescue mission is now close to wrapping up. Authorities have been combing through the damaged remains of the 6,500-square-metre mall for nearly a week, slowed by the scale of destruction left behind by the fire.

Some of the remains recovered are incomplete, but officials confirmed they were able to count 67 skulls. So far, only 15 victims have been formally identified.

Busy Mall, Deadly Timing

Gul Plaza housed around 1,200 shops across several floors and was packed with shoppers at the time of the fire. The incident happened during Karachi’s peak wedding season, when shopping centres are usually at their busiest.

Survivors and witnesses said overcrowding and tightly packed stalls made it harder for people to escape as the fire spread.

Locked Exits Raise Safety Concerns

While the cause of the fire is still under investigation, early reports point to serious safety failures. According to police, only three of the mall’s 16 exits were open when the fire broke out, with the rest reportedly locked.

Witnesses also said there were few working fire exits, making evacuation nearly impossible for many inside.

Judicial Inquiry Ordered

Sindh Governor Kamran Khan Tessori has called for a judicial inquiry into the incident, saying those responsible must be identified and punished without delay. Authorities are expected to examine safety violations and accountability once rescue efforts officially conclude.
