May 12 Declared a Holiday in PH for Midterm Elections

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has officially declared Monday, May 12, 2025, a special non-working holiday across the Philippines. The move is meant to ensure that more Filipinos can participate in the midterm elections without work getting in the way.

A Push for Higher Voter Turnout

The decision came after a formal request from the Commission on Elections (Comelec), which asked the Palace to help boost voter turnout by giving people a day off. Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin signed Proclamation No. 878, making the announcement official.

“This gives everyone the time to exercise their right to vote,” the proclamation stated.

Electing New Leaders Nationwide

This year’s midterm polls are set to fill important positions in Congress and thousands of local government seats. With voting often taking hours due to long lines and travel time to precincts, the holiday is expected to give voters the flexibility they need.

Comelec Chairman George Erwin Garcia earlier said that giving Filipinos a day off is one way to encourage more people to cast their votes.
