The project isn’t just about roads. It includes pedestrian walkways, a dedicated cycling track, landscaped boulevards, and new public spaces. Plus, there will be a direct link from the Mall of the Emirates Metro Station to nearby residential areas to boost last-mile connectivity for commuters.

This street upgrade is just one piece of a much bigger puzzle. It’s part of the RTA’s broader plan to enhance nearby roads like Jumeirah Street, Al Wasl Street, and Al Safa Street, with more updates to be announced soon.

Six Major Intersections Getting a Makeover

Mattar Al Tayer, RTA’s Director General, confirmed that the project will serve over two million residents in areas like Jumeirah, Al Manara, Al Barsha, Umm Suqeim, Al Sufouh, Umm Al Sheif, and Al Quoz.

Travel time between Jumeirah Street and Al Khail Road will drop from 20 minutes to just 6 minutes. And once done, Umm Suqeim Street will be able to handle 16,000 vehicles per hour in both directions.

Here’s what’s planned at key intersections:

  • Jumeirah Street: A two-lane tunnel in each direction with a signalised junction
  • Al Wasl Street: Two-lane tunnel from Sheikh Zayed Road to Jumeirah
  • Sheikh Zayed Road: Two new bridges to ease congestion
  • First Al Khail Street: Tunnel from Al Barsha to Sheikh Zayed Road
  • First Al Khail to Al Asayel: Widened to four lanes each way
  • Al Khail Road: Two flyovers serving Al Quoz and Deira traffic

In total, the upgrade includes four new bridges and three tunnels, with a combined length of 4,100 metres.

Ongoing Works Between Al Khail and MBZ Road

Work is also progressing on a 4.6-kilometre stretch between Al Khail Road and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road. This phase features an 800-metre tunnel near Kings’ School in Al Barsha South and is already over 70% complete, with an expected opening in Q3 2025.

Major Upgrades Underway Along Al Qudra Road

Meanwhile, a massive revamp is happening on Al Qudra Road, from Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road to Emirates Road. It includes:

  • 2,700 metres of new bridges
  • 11.6 km of road widening
  • Reduced travel time from 9.4 minutes to 2.8 minutes

  • A 600-metre bridge at the junction between Arabian Ranches and Dubai Studio City
  • A 700-metre, seven-lane bridge at Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan Street
  • Auxiliary ramps to ease merging traffic
  • A 500-metre bridge for traffic to Jebel Ali
  • A 900-metre bridge heading toward Downtown and Dubai Airport
  • 3 km of service roads added along Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan Street

More Access, Less Congestion

RTA will also extend Al Qudra Road from Emirates Road to a key roundabout serving major developments. Future phases include a new road to connect the southern Developers Area to Emirates Road, and lane expansions to handle even more traffic.
