Dubai Tunnels, Crossings Get Eco-Friendly Makeover With LED Lights

Dubai's Road and Transport Authority (RTA) has recently replaced 14,400 traditional lighting units with eco-friendly LED lights across at least 39 tunnels and crossings, spanning over 22 km.

This step comes within Dubai's framework to increase the sustainability levels of its infrastructure projects.

"RTA is deeply committed to energy conservation, strengthening Dubai and the UAE's standing in the green economy and sustainability, and promoting a clean environment," the authority wrote in a Tweet.

"In doing so, RTA is committed to implementing the best international practices to achieve financial sustainability through optimal utilisation and extension of the lifespan of its assets," it added.

This project, which lasted for about six months, covered prominent locations, including Shindagha Tunnel, Airport Tunnel, Dubai Mall and Dubai World Trade Centre tunnels.

The new LED lighting units will save 60 percent of energy and has 177 percent longer lifespan than conventional ones, with a lifespan of 50,000 hours, compared to 18,000 hours for conventional lighting units.

Hence, this "reduces the frequency of replacements and minimises maintenance and operational costs," said Maitha bin Adai, CEO of the RTA's Traffic and Roads Agency.
