Pets May Now Be Allowed at Abu Dhabi Hotels and Restaurants

Under newly updated tourism rules, hotels and restaurants across the emirate are now encouraged to welcome cats and dogs, marking a big shift from the previous pet ban in most venues.

Pets Are Now Welcome (In the Right Spaces)

The Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) announced that venues with tourism licences can now allow companion animals, such as cats and dogs, under amended public health legislation.

Before this update, pets were largely prohibited in restaurants, with exceptions only for certified service animals. That rule is now officially relaxed.

Venues that choose to go pet-friendly are encouraged to set up dedicated areas for animals — preferably outdoor spaces like terraces, balconies, or open-air seating.

It’s Optional for Venues

Not every café or hotel has to jump on the pet-friendly trend. The decision is still up to each establishment.

Those that do allow pets must make sure health, safety, and comfort standards are met — for guests, staff, and animals alike. Some venues may also set up enclosed or designated zones based on their own policies.

A Push for a More Inclusive Abu Dhabi

According to officials, the move is part of Abu Dhabi’s broader plan to become a more inclusive, lifestyle-driven global destination.

Fahad Ali Alshehhi from the DMT said the updated rules support the emirate’s vision of welcoming diverse visitors — including those who don’t want to leave their pets behind.

Pet-Friendly Hotels Already Exist

This isn’t entirely new territory. The W Abu Dhabi – Yas Island made headlines back in 2021 when it became the first luxury hotel in the capital to allow pets during staycations.

At the time, pets under 18kg were allowed in suites and lobby areas, though not in restaurants or pool areas. With the new rules in place, similar venues may now go a step further.

What This Means Going Forward

Pet owners could soon enjoy meals, coffee dates, and hotel stays without arranging pet sitters — as long as the venue opts in.

More details are expected as hotels and restaurants roll out their own pet-friendly policies, but one thing’s clear: Abu Dhabi is officially warming up to four-legged guests.
