UAE Just Had Its Hottest May Day on Record

If you felt like you were melting in the UAE this weekend, you’re not wrong. The country just recorded its highest May temperature on record: a fiery 50.4°C.

According to the National Center of Meteorology (NCM), the sweltering heat was logged at 2:30 PM in Al Shawamekh, Abu Dhabi on Friday, marking the hottest May day since records began in 2003.

“The highest temperature recorded over the country today is 50.4°C in Al Shawamekh (Abu Dhabi) at 14:30 UAE Local Time,” the NCM posted on X (formerly Twitter).

An NCM official confirmed to AFP, “This is the highest temperature we've ever recorded (for May) since we started keeping records in 2003.”

This reading surpassed the previous May high of 50.2°C, which was set back in 2009, making this year’s heatwave one for the books.

While the UAE is known for its boiling summer temperatures, this early spike is raising eyebrows (and AC bills). The country, a major oil producer, has been ramping up investments in renewable energy and sustainability efforts to prepare for climate shifts and rising global temperatures.

So yeah, it’s not just hot—it’s historic. Stay hydrated, stay indoors, and maybe reconsider that midday desert adventure.
