Abu Dhabi's Department of Culture and Tourism proudly announced the recognition of the beloved traditional dish, Harees, on UNESCO's Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage. This porridge-like delicacy holds deep cultural significance, often cherished during family gatherings and religious festivities, particularly during Ramadan.

Global Recognition and UAE's Role

The approval came during UNESCO's eighteenth session in Kasane-Botswana, recognizing Harees as a cultural emblem meeting the outlined criteria of the 2003 Convention. The nomination was led by the United Arab Emirates, in collaboration with Saudi Arabia and Oman, reflecting a collective effort to preserve and celebrate regional heritage.

Minister of Culture, Sheikh Salem bin Khalid Al Qassimi, highlighted the UAE's dedication to promoting its rich heritage and identity globally. Harees, a dish prepared by slow-cooking wheat in salted water and then adding meat, predominantly lamb or chicken, holds immense cultural significance.
