Ghanaian Nurse Wins $250K for Championing Equal Cancer Care

A Ghanaian nurse, Naomi Oyoe Ohene Oti, just made global headlines — and for all the right reasons. At a glitzy ceremony in Dubai, the mother of three took home the prestigious Aster Guardians Global Nursing Award 2025 and a cool $250,000, recognizing her trailblazing work in equal cancer care across Africa.

Naomi has been a fierce advocate for bridging healthcare gaps through standardised nursing education and leadership development, especially in oncology care. “The number one priority for us right now is the standardisation of training — and it's urgent,” she stressed during her winning speech.

She’s been in the field since 2001, and her mission? To close the care gap for cancer patients through outreach, education, and training. With the award money, she plans to expand nurse training programmes, grow her faculty network, and inspire the next generation of oncology nurses.

But leadership, according to Naomi, isn’t about job titles. “Every nurse is a leader... it’s about accountability, integrity, and action,” she told media at the event.

She’s also a big believer in collaboration: “While we have already established some collaborations, new ones are emerging, each with the potential to help us make a deeper impact.” One such partnership even led to the creation of national breast cancer awareness materials — proof that change happens step by step.

Her personal cheerleader throughout this journey? Her husband. “It was not always easy for me but my husband was hugely supportive,” she shared.

Naomi’s story isn’t just about her. It’s a rallying cry for every nurse out there — to step up, speak out, and lead change.
