Iran Confirms Death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei After Joint U.S.-Israel Strikes on Tehran

Iranian state media have officially confirmed that Ali Khamenei was killed in joint U.S.-Israeli airstrikes that targeted his office in Tehran. He was 86.

The announcement follows earlier claims by U.S. and Israeli officials that the longtime Supreme Leader had been eliminated. A nationwide 40-day mourning period has now been declared.

Just hours before the confirmation, Iranian outlets Tasnim and Mehr had reported that Khamenei remained “steadfast and firm in commanding the field.”

That narrative shifted Sunday when state media acknowledged his death.

U.S. President Donald Trump said on his Truth Social platform that Khamenei was killed in the coordinated strikes, describing the operation as driven by “highly sophisticated tracking systems” in cooperation with Israel.

Trump added that this moment presents “the single greatest chance for the Iranian people to take back their country,” and called for Iran’s security forces, including the IRGC, to align peacefully with what he described as Iranian patriots.

Israel Signals Success

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had earlier said there were “growing signs” that Khamenei had been killed.

Reuters also reported, citing a senior Israeli official, that Khamenei’s body had been located.

The joint operation marks one of the most dramatic escalations in years of rising tensions over Iran’s nuclear program and regional influence.

Why This Changes Everything

Khamenei had led Iran since 1989, taking over from Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the architect of the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

As Supreme Leader, he held ultimate authority over the military, judiciary, and all branches of government. The role is not symbolic — it is the highest power in Iran’s political system.

Iranian authorities had long prepared contingency plans in case he was killed during a conflict. Still, his assassination injects major uncertainty into an already volatile situation.

With tensions running high, attention now shifts to who steps in next — and whether the conflict expands further across the region.

For millions inside and outside Iran, this is more than the death of a leader. It’s a turning point with unpredictable consequences.
