In a phone call on Wednesday with UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed, the two leaders voiced serious concern over the ongoing airstrikes and growing tensions. According to a statement from the Kremlin, both Putin and Sheikh Mohamed warned of the “extremely negative consequences” the conflict could have on the entire region if it continues unchecked.

Putin confirmed that Russia is ready to help facilitate dialogue between the two countries, saying Moscow is open to playing a mediating role.

The conflict has intensified since Israel launched strikes last Friday targeting Iran’s military and nuclear infrastructure. In response, Iran fired back with drones and rockets. The violence has already claimed civilian lives in both countries, and diplomatic efforts so far have failed to slow the escalation.

Fueling the fire, former U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday suggested that American forces might attempt to assassinate Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. He also called for Iran’s “unconditional surrender,” a statement that has drawn criticism for further inflaming the situation.

Russia maintains close military ties with Iran, especially since its 2022 invasion of Ukraine, but also works to preserve a working relationship with Israel. Putin has recently spoken with both Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Iran’s newly elected President Masoud Pezeshkian, offering to help mediate peace.

With tensions at an all-time high, all eyes are now on whether Moscow’s diplomatic outreach can help dial down the conflict.
