Philippine VP Sara Duterte Says She’s Running for President in 2028

The 2028 election talk just got very real.

Vice President Sara Duterte has officially announced she will run for president in 2028 — and she didn’t hold back while doing it.

At a press conference, Duterte criticized President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., blaming his administration for inflation, corruption, and what she described as a struggling healthcare system.

“It took me 47 years to understand that my life was never meant to be mine alone,” she said, framing her decision as a sense of duty.

From Running Mate to Rival

Duterte also apologized for backing Marcos in the 2022 elections, when she ran as his vice-presidential partner. Their alliance helped secure a political comeback for the Marcos family.

Now, that partnership is clearly over.

Malacañang responded briefly, with the Palace wishing her “good luck” while rejecting her accusations.

Under the Constitution, Marcos Jr. cannot run again in 2028, as presidents are limited to one six-year term.

The Duterte Factor

Sara Duterte is the daughter of former president Rodrigo Duterte, who is currently detained in The Hague over cases linked to his war on drugs.

During Rodrigo Duterte’s presidency from 2016 to 2022, the Philippines shifted its foreign policy closer to Beijing and away from Washington. Marcos later reversed that direction, strengthening ties with the United States and taking a firmer stance against China in the South China Sea.

Political analysts say a Sara Duterte presidency could again reshape the country’s global alliances.

Smart Timing — or Big Risk?

The announcement comes as Duterte faces fresh impeachment complaints accusing her of corruption and betrayal of public trust. She survived similar efforts last year.

Some analysts believe the early declaration is strategic — shifting the spotlight and framing attacks against her as political moves tied to the 2028 race.

But there’s a flip side. A presidential bid this early could also invite heavier scrutiny and sharper attacks, which may test her political strength over the next few years.

One thing’s clear: the road to 2028 has officially begun — and it’s already heating up.
