Sharjah Observes Artemis II Mission to the Moon

Space enthusiasts in the UAE witnessed a historic moment as the Sharjah Space and Astronomy Hub tracked Artemis II during its journey to the Moon early Saturday.

The Sharjah Observatory observed the spacecraft between 4:00am and 5:00am, capturing part of the mission as it continues its 10-day journey around the Moon and back.

Launched by NASA on April 1, Artemis II carries four astronauts—three from the United States and one from Canada—aboard the Orion spacecraft.

The mission marks the first time humans have travelled toward the Moon in over 50 years, since Apollo 17 in 1972.

Artemis II is a key step in NASA’s long-term plans to return humans to the lunar surface, including landing the first woman and the first person of colour on the Moon by 2028.

Beyond the Moon, the mission is also seen as a stepping stone for future human exploration of Mars.

The UAE continues to play an active role in global space initiatives. The UAE Space Agency joined the Artemis Accords in 2020, strengthening international collaboration in space exploration.

The country has achieved major milestones in recent years, including sending Hazza AlMansoori to space and advancing its national astronaut programme.
