Statue of Liberty Replica Collapses in Brazil After Strong Winds

A nearly 40-metre-tall replica of the Statue of Liberty collapsed in the Brazilian city of Guaiba after strong winds swept through the area on Monday afternoon, with dramatic footage of the incident quickly going viral online.

Local authorities and the company that owns the structure confirmed that no injuries were reported after the statue fell in the car park of a Havan retail megastore near a fast-food outlet. The replica, which measured around 114 feet in height, was among several similar statues installed outside Havan stores across Brazil.

Videos circulating on social media show the towering structure toppling over and breaking apart on impact. The head of the statue shattered into pieces as it hit the ground. According to local media reports, the upper section of the replica, measuring approximately 78 feet, was damaged in the collapse, while the 36-foot pedestal remained intact.

Following the incident, Havan said in a statement that the statue had been installed outside the store when it opened in 2020 and had the required technical certification. The company added that the area was immediately cordoned off to prevent injuries or further damage, and cleanup teams were dispatched to remove debris.

Marcelo Maranata, the mayor of Guaiba, said no casualties were reported and praised the swift response by emergency teams. He said local authorities, alongside state Civil Defence officials, secured the area and assessed the site for any additional damage after the incident, which occurred at around 3 pm.

The supermarket continued operating in unaffected areas, though access to the section near the fallen statue remained restricted. Authorities have confirmed that a technical inspection will be conducted to determine the exact cause of the collapse, as investigations into the impact of the strong winds continue.
