Abu Dhabi Tram to Link Yas Island Hotspots to Airport

Big news for anyone who loves Yas Island hangouts—Abu Dhabi is building a tram network that’ll connect the island’s iconic landmarks to Zayed International Airport. Yep, that means Ferrari World, Yas Marina Circuit, Yas Bay, and even Disneyland Abu Dhabi (when it opens) could all be a tram ride away.

How It’ll Work

The project, officially called the Abu Dhabi Light Rail Project (LRT), was revealed by Abu Dhabi Transport Company (ADT) at the Global Rail Transport Infrastructure Exhibition this week. It’ll roll out in three phases, with the base phase starting at Yas Gateway Park. From there, the line will loop through Yas attractions before crossing into the mainland and heading straight toward the airport, Etihad Plaza, and Al Raha Mall.

What About the Airport?

Right now, only a few buses connect the airport to downtown Abu Dhabi. With the tram, airport access is expected to get a serious glow-up. “We wanted to link up the airport with the rest of Abu Dhabi,” said Cheryl Chan, Strategic Adviser at Abu Dhabi Airports, adding that public transport upgrades are a huge priority.

Urbanloop: The Pod Cars of the Future

That’s not all. ADT is also testing Urbanloop, a French-made autonomous pod system for “first and last mile” trips. Think of it as little self-driving shuttles (with AC and dust protection—because, Abu Dhabi). Each pod fits 2–12 people and can carry up to 1,500 passengers per hour. Trials kick off on Reem Island in the next six months.

Why It Matters

Abu Dhabi wants to rank among the world’s top 30 cities in the Global Traffic Index by 2045, and this is part of that big-picture plan. Between trams, pod cars, and driverless taxis, the Emirate is betting big on smart, sustainable transport to keep the city moving.
