If you thought the New Year fireworks were impressive, wait until you see what the sky has planned next. As 2026 rolls on, UAE residents are in for a full year of celestial moments—from glowing supermoons to meteor showers streaking across the night.

Here’s a simple guide to the must-watch sky events coming your way.

Supermoons and Rare Lunar Events

The year kicks off strong with the Wolf Supermoon on January 3, when the Moon appears bigger and brighter than usual. It also lines up perfectly with the Quadrantids meteor shower, making it a double treat for night-sky fans.

Later in the year, look out for the Blue Micromoon on May 31. Despite the name, it won’t appear blue—but it’s special because it’s the second full moon in the same month. Unlike supermoons, this one will look slightly smaller and dimmer.

After a long break, the Moon makes another dramatic comeback with the Beaver Supermoon, followed by the Cold Supermoon, which will be the brightest and closest full moon of 2026—and the closest since 2019.

Meteor Showers Worth Staying Up For

If you enjoy watching shooting stars, 2026 won’t disappoint.

The Quadrantids peak on January 3–4, known for fast, bright meteors and one of the strongest displays of the year.
The Lyrids follow on April 22–23, slower but famous for surprise fireballs.
In peak summer, the Perseids light up the skies on August 12–13, perfect for warm late-night viewing.
October brings the Orionids, linked to Halley’s Comet and best seen after midnight.
November’s Leonids offer glowing trails, though in smaller numbers.
The year wraps up with the Geminids on December 13–14, often considered the most intense and colourful meteor shower of all.

Best Time to Watch

Most meteor showers are best viewed after midnight and away from city lights. No telescopes needed—just clear skies, patience, and maybe a late-night coffee.
