Growing Up Between Two Worlds: A Writer's Tale of Finding Home in the UAE

When Ameena Juveiria Navab stepped off the plane in 2000, she was just four years old. She carried no memories of the land she was leaving behind, only the vague warmth of a mother's hand and the promise of a new beginning.

Two decades later, she is no longer the child who arrived with her family seeking opportunity. She is a journalist, an author, and someone who has watched the UAE transform from a quiet desert landscape into a global metropolis—all while finding her own voice within its evolving story.

"I watched as it changed right before my eyes," Ameena recalls, her voice carrying the weight of someone who has lived through history. "I saw a time when Dubai didn't have the Burj Khalifa, when Sheikh Zayed Road suddenly came into existence, and when hailstones were common in the UAE's winters."

For Ameena, the UAE has never been a temporary stop. It has always been home. But the realization didn't come easily. It came in moments of displacement, in the quiet ache of being a foreigner in the land of her birth, and in the profound comfort of seeing the desert sands of Dubai appear on the horizon from an airplane window.

"When I would go back to India and find myself as a foreigner there, but the moment I would see the desert sands of Dubai from my airplane and the high rises come into view, I would think, 'It's good to be home,'" she says.

The Architecture of Belonging

Ameena's story is not unique, yet it is profoundly personal. The UAE, she explains, offers a rare kind of freedom: the freedom to become whoever you want to be.

"What I love most is the sense of possibility here," she says. "The UAE doesn't box you in—you can build, pivot, and reinvent yourself without being limited by where you started. There's also this unique mix of cultures and perspectives that constantly inspires creativity, which has played a huge role in both my writing and professional growth."

Today, Ameena works for Ducab, the UAE's government energy entity, where she has advanced her career in communications. But her true passion lies beyond the corporate world. She is an author, and her novel Daybreak is a testament to the discipline and determination that have defined her life in the Emirates.

Writing Through the Night

Building something of her own while balancing a full-time corporate career was one of the biggest challenges Ameena faced. The path to publication was not paved with instant success. It was marked by long nights, slow growth, and moments of doubt.

"Being an author, publishing my novel, and writing a manuscript from scratch meant long nights, slow growth, and moments where it felt like no one was reading," she admits. "I used the long commutes from work and home to write my novel. When others slept, I wrote. When others scrolled on their phones, I edited. Consistency and discipline helped me get results."

Her words carry the quiet pride of someone who has earned every word. The UAE, with its emphasis on ambition and achievement, provided the environment she needed to push through the darkness and find her light.

A Country That Believes in Effort

One moment stands out in Ameena's journey as a defining representation of life in the UAE. It was the day she decided to take a leap of faith and approach major bookstores and distributors to showcase her book. She reached out to platforms like Kinokuniya and IngramSpark, not knowing what to expect.

"As a relatively new author, I assumed there would be layers of difficulty or hesitation—but instead, I was met with openness and encouragement," she recalls. "There was no unnecessary gatekeeping, just a willingness to consider my work on its merit."

That experience stayed with her. It reflected something powerful about the UAE: a place where effort is recognized, and people understand the value of building something from the ground up. In a country shaped by expats, there's a shared respect for hard work and ambition. What stood out most was how willing people were to support that journey.

Three Words to Define a Nation

If Ameena were to describe the UAE in three words, she would choose: ambitious, success, and freedom.

These words encapsulate not just the country, but her own journey within it. From a four-year-old child who knew nothing of the land she now calls home, to a published author whose work is being considered on its merit, Ameena's story is a microcosm of the UAE itself—a nation built on the belief that anyone, regardless of where they started, can achieve greatness.

The Road Ahead

As the UAE continues to evolve, so too does Ameena. She sees herself as part of a larger narrative—one of resilience, creativity, and the relentless pursuit of dreams. Her story is not just hers; it belongs to the countless others who have found a home in the Emirates and discovered their potential along the way.

"The UAE doesn't box you in," she says once more, as if to remind herself of the truth she has lived for twenty years. And in those words, there is a promise—not just for Ameena, but for everyone who dares to build, pivot, and reinvent themselves in a land that refuses to limit what is possible.
