Mers Case Detected in UAE: WHO

A man in the UAE has been hospitalized after contracting the Mers virus, the World Health Organisation (WHO) announced.

The patient was a 28-year-old male expat living in Al Ain, Abu Dhabi, according to a statement issued by the global health organization.

Mers, commonly known as Middle Eastern respiratory syndrome, is a viral respiratory infection caused by the Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV).

Although uncommon in the UAE, since 2013 there have been 94 cases reported to WHO. 12 of the cases resulted in death.

The 28-year-old man in Al Ain in Abu Dhabi had “had no history of direct or indirect contact with dromedaries, goats, or sheep” according to WHO.
