UAE Residents Will No Longer Be Able to Share Netflix Passwords

UAE citizens won't be able to share their Netflix credentials outside of their residences as of Thursday, July 20th, Khaleej Times reported, citing a customer service representative from the streaming giant.

"Now, only members living in the same house can share passwords and use the same account," the representative said. "It cannot be used in a house across the street, for example."

When asked how Netflix detects and restricts password sharing, a spokesman explained the software records the WiFi network and IP address of devices.

Netflix has also announced that it will no longer allow password sharing in India starting the same day as the UAE.

Customers in India who are found to be sharing their accounts with anyone with people outside their household in India are receiving emails from Netflix as a result of this policy to ensure compliance.

Netflix said earlier in May that it is expanding its crackdown on unauthorised password sharing to its largest market, the US.

Furthermore, Netflix now permits adding an additional member from outside their household for an additional monthly fee.

"Your Netflix account is for you and the people you live with your household," Netflix said in an email to US customers.
