New Abu Dhabi Bridge Opened

An 11km bridge in Abu Dhabi is opened and it connects islands.

A new bridge opened to traffic on February 9th in Abu Dhabi, which is 11km and connects Al Reem Island, Umm Yifenah Island, and Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Street. The bridge was inaugurated by Sheikh Khalid bin Mohammed who is a member of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council and Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Office.

The project has a total of seven bridges including two overwater bridges that span over 3.8 km of water and a six-lane highway that can accommodate 6,000 vehicles per hour in each direction. The bridge also includes walking and cycling paths.

To preserve the environment around the bridge, the developers utilized precast concrete and arched causeways to allow water flow and minimize the impact of construction on the mangrove wetlands. The causeway also maintains a navigation channel to allow passage for boats and marine animals, and mangrove trees were planted on Jubail Island.

For the project, 85% of the materials were sourced locally in order to make the project sustainable and add value to the local economy.

The bridge is the first phase of the Mid-Island Parkway project, which will connect Al Reem Island, Saadiyat Island, Al Raha Beach, and Khalifa City. The project will also include cycling and walking pathways and is expected to be completed by 2028.
