It all started when an Arab national allegedly sent an insulting message to an Asian man via WhatsApp. What followed was far more than a heated reply. The recipient physically attacked the sender, punching him in the right eye. The injury resulted in a detached retina and permanent vision loss, confirmed as a 35% permanent disability by a forensic report.

Legal Consequences for Both

The Dubai Criminal Court didn’t take the matter lightly. The Arab man was fined AED 1,000 for sending the insult electronically, while the attacker received a six-month prison sentence followed by deportation.

Civil Lawsuit for Damages

After the criminal case concluded, the injured man took further legal action by filing a civil lawsuit. He demanded AED 150,000 in compensation, citing medical costs, emotional trauma, and a major disruption to both his personal and professional life. He also asked for 12% interest annually from the time of filing until the payment was complete.

To support his claim, he provided detailed medical reports, official court rulings, and certification from the public prosecutor confirming the finality of the verdict. He argued that the assault caused not just physical damage but also deep emotional distress and humiliation.

Civil Court’s Final Ruling

The civil court emphasized that the criminal verdict was enough to establish fault and responsibility. Citing Dubai Court of Cassation precedent, it confirmed the attack was a serious violation of the victim’s physical and emotional well-being.

The court awarded the victim AED 100,000 in compensation, along with 5% interest starting from the date the ruling became final.

What began as a digital insult on WhatsApp ultimately led to blindness, jail time, deportation, and a six-figure financial penalty, serving as a clear warning about how small disputes can have devastating consequences in Dubai’s legal system.
