Dubai Police Warn of Fake Consumer Protection Scam Sites

Residents in the UAE and across the GCC are being urged to stay alert when searching online for consumer complaint services, after Dubai Police warned about fake Consumer Protection websites made to steal banking details and empty accounts.

The Anti-Fraud Centre at the General Department of Criminal Investigation said scammers are building fake websites that look real. These sites then trick victims into installing remote access software, which gives criminals access to their devices and bank accounts.

Dubai Police said the scam often starts when a person searches online for the Consumer Protection website to file a complaint. Instead of the official page, they may open a fake website that asks for personal details such as name, email address, phone number, and complaint information.

After the form is submitted, the victim may get a phone call from someone pretending to be a Consumer Protection officer. The fraudster then repeats the complaint details taken from the fake website, making the call look genuine.

Once trust is built, the caller asks the victim to download remote access software and sign in to online banking while the program is active.

Dubai Police said this lets criminals see and control the victim’s phone or computer screen, which can expose sensitive banking information and lead to money transfers or unauthorised purchases.

Authorities warned that remote access apps can give fraudsters full control of smartphones and computers, putting financial data at risk and causing major losses.

Dubai Police advised residents to use only official Consumer Protection channels when filing complaints and never share banking passwords, card details, or other financial information with anyone claiming to represent the service.

The Anti-Fraud Centre also reminded the public not to click on suspicious links or download unknown software sent by people claiming to help.

Anyone who faces a similar scam should report it immediately through the Dubai Police eCrime platform or by calling 901.
