For decades, scientists noticed a baffling phenomenon in Earth's upper atmosphere. It was recognised that the atmosphere traps heat close to the Earth's surface, but measurements indicated that the heat loss was unusually rapid at the higher levels of the atmosphere. Recent studies now help unravel this enigma: increased CO2 concentration induced by human activities are speeding up the cooling in the upper atmosphere and changing its state in many aspects.
