COP28's Action Plan Might Cut Down Global Cooling Emissions by 96%

COP28 witnessed another breakthrough with at least 60 countries signing a pledge to cut down global cooling emissions potentially by 96 percent.

The global cooling pledge calls for countries to cut down emissions related to cooling by 68 percent by 2050.

However, the cut in emissions could potentially increase by 96 percent if new technology can be introduced.

At the time being, cooling accounts for one-fifth of the world's electricity consumption and more than seven percent of greenhouse gas emissions globally.

The cooling sector's growth seems unnecessary as 1.2 billion people in Asia and Africa do not have access to cooling, which emphasizes the need for sustainable measures in the sector.

An expert at COP highlighted the importance of using sustainable cooling measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 60 percent.

The reduction in emissions can be increased to 96 percent, but this depends on rates of decarbonization, according to the expert.
