UAE Heat Hits Record Highs Again and It's Only May

The UAE just smashed its temperature record again—51.6°C was recorded in Sweihan, Al Ain, at exactly 1:45 p.m. on Friday, according to the National Center of Meteorology (NCM).

Yep, we’re still a month out from the summer solstice (June 21), and yet the heat’s already giving peak July energy. Just two days earlier, on May 23, the country hit 50.4°C, setting its highest May temperature since 2003—until this latest scorcher rolled in and rewrote the record books.

If that sounds intense, it’s because it is. And it follows April’s record-breaking streak too, when the UAE logged its hottest April on record, averaging a daily high of 42.6°C. The previous April record was 42.2°C in 2017.

According to Khadijah Al Hariri, Operations Manager at the Dubai Astronomy Group, summer technically begins when “the Sun reaches its highest and northernmost point in the sky”—aka the summer solstice.

But clearly, the weather didn’t get the memo to wait. For context: in July 2023, Sweihan recorded a sizzling 50.8°C, which this year’s May has already outdone.

Why it matters:

This kind of extreme heat isn’t just uncomfortable—it can be dangerous. Officials are urging everyone to take precautions, especially children, seniors, pregnant individuals, and people with chronic health conditions.

So what should you do?

  • Stay indoors during peak heat hours
  • Hydrate like it’s your part-time job
  • Wear light, breathable clothing
  • Don’t skip the sunscreen (even if you’re just running errands)

The heat is real, and summer’s barely begun. Stay safe, UAE!
