UAE Sets New Rules for Emiratis Studying Abroad

The UAE is raising the bar for higher education abroad. On Monday, the government rolled out a new set of rules that require Emirati students heading overseas for university to choose from only the top-ranked institutions in the world.

The move, announced by the UAE Cabinet, aims to better align international education with the country’s future goals—boosting career-readiness and ensuring students receive world-class degrees.

So what’s changing? Here’s the breakdown:

If you're heading to any university worldwide, it needs to be ranked among the top 50 in your chosen major.

For students eyeing schools in the U.S. or Australia, the institution must be in the top 100 globally in both the subject of study and overall ranking.

Planning to study in other English-speaking countries (not the U.S. or Australia)? Your school must rank in the top 200 for both your field and overall.

Studying in a non-English-speaking country? Then the bar is set at the top 300 in both categories.

This policy shift is designed to help students make smarter, quality-driven academic choices that align with global standards and the UAE’s national vision.

For current Emirati students already abroad, there’s a one-year grace period to adjust their academic status. Those seeking an exemption can submit a request, which will be reviewed by a special committee headed by the General Secretariat of the Education, Human Development, and Community Development Council.

The new mandate isn’t just about rankings—it’s about long-term success. By streamlining international scholarships and sharpening academic focus, the UAE is making it clear: higher education abroad needs to be elite, or it’s not on the list.
