Driverless Taxis Hit the Streets of Dubai

Dubai's road authority started the supervised testing of driverless taxis on public roads in the city on Thursday, Oct. 12.

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) began the testing of the driverless taxis in Dubai's Jumeirah 1.

This testing of these taxis is conducted with a safety driver behind the wheel. The testing follows up on previous trials of vehicles on closed test tracks.

The RTA and the autonomous vehicles company Cruise will examine autonomous driving safety and the performance of vehicles in Jumeirah 1.

The assessment teams will also test the vehicles' performance in traffic.

Ten driverless taxis are expected to transport passengers by the end of 2023.

RTA plans to make 25 percent of total trips autonomous across various kinds of transport by 2030.

By that year, 4,000 driverless taxis are expected to be operating in Dubai.

The launch of driverless taxis is expected to reduce the likelihood of road accidents.
