Driving Below Minimum Speed on This Road Can Result in AED400 Fine

Starting in April 2023, Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Road in Abu Dhabi will have a minimum speed limit of 120 km/h. According to the Abu Dhabi police, beginning May 1, violators would be fined Dh400.

With a maximum speed restriction of 140 km/h and a minimum speed limit of 120 km/h on the first and second lanes from the left, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Road will implement a minimum speed limit that will be enforced on the two left express lanes in both directions of traffic.

Maj-Gen Ahmed Saif bin Zaytoun Al Muhairi, director of the Central Operations Sector said, "Implementing the minimum speed is aimed at boosting road safety. It will urge slow vehicles to use appropriate lanes."

The Abu Dhabi Police issued a post on social media stating that warnings for violations will begin on April 1, 2023, and that actual penalties for "driving a vehicle at a speed less than the minimum speed limit set for the road" would be implemented on May 1, 2023.

The last lane, which is reserved for large trucks and has a speed restriction of 140 km/h, would not be subject to fines for exceeding the minimum speed limit. Additionally, Abu Dhabi police urged drivers to keep a safe distance from other cars and to always check that the roads are free before changing lanes.
