Dubai’s AI Radar System Detects Eight Road Violations

Dubai Police has taken a major step towards improving road safety by introducing artificial intelligence (AI)-powered radar systems. These advanced radars are now deployed across key roads and streets, with the capability to detect various traffic violations more accurately. The system focuses on speeding, running red lights, lane violations, distracted driving, and more.

Motorists are urged to be extra cautious as hefty fines, black points, and vehicle impoundment are at stake. Here’s a breakdown of the types of violations the radars can detect, along with the fines and penalties that come with them.

1. Speeding

Speeding is one of the most commonly detected traffic violations. The AI-powered radars can pinpoint drivers who exceed speed limits by varying degrees. Here’s what you need to know:

Exceeding the speed limit by more than 80 km/h

  • Fine: AED 3,000
  • Black Points: 23
  • Vehicle Impoundment: 60 days (for light vehicles)

Exceeding the speed limit by more than 60 km/h

  • Fine: AED 2,000
  • Black Points: 12
  • Vehicle Impoundment: 30 days (for light vehicles)

Exceeding the speed limit by no more than 50 km/h

  • Fine: AED 1,000

Exceeding the speed limit by no more than 40 km/h

  • Fine: AED 700

Exceeding the speed limit by no more than 30 km/h

  • Fine: AED 600

Exceeding the speed limit by no more than 20 km/h

  • Fine: AED 300

2. Running Red Lights

Running a red light is a serious violation that can lead to significant penalties. The AI system easily detects such offences, and the consequences are severe.

  • Fine: AED 1,000
  • Black Points: 12
  • Vehicle Impoundment: 30 days
  • Vehicle Release Fee: AED 50,000 in Dubai (as per Decree No. 30 of 2023)

3. Lane Discipline

Lane discipline is crucial for maintaining traffic flow and safety. The AI radars can identify careless driving, including:

  • Driving on the hard shoulder
  • Crossing solid lines
  • Sudden swerving
  • Tailgating
  • If caught violating lane discipline, you’ll face a fine of AED 400.

4. Distracted Driving (Using a Mobile Phone)

Distracted driving is a leading cause of accidents. The radar system can detect if a driver is using a mobile phone while driving by tracking hand movements and phone screen lights.

  • Fine: AED 800
  • Black Points: 4
  • Vehicle Impoundment: 30 days

5. Not Wearing a Seat Belt

AI radars can also spot seat belt violations, even in low-light conditions. It’s important to buckle up, as failure to do so will result in:

  • Fine: AED 400
  • Black Points: 4

6. Illegal Window Tinting

Window tinting is another area where the AI radar system plays a vital role. While some exemptions exist for medical reasons, unauthorized tinting poses safety risks and is easily detected.

  • Fine: AED 1,500
  • Vehicle Impoundment: If the tint exceeds the permissible limit, the vehicle can be impounded, and the release fee is AED 10,000 in Dubai (as per Decree No. 30 of 2023)

7. Noisy Vehicles

Vehicles with modifications that increase noise levels or enhance speed will face strict penalties, including:

  • Fine: AED 2,000
  • Black Points: 12
  • Vehicle Release Fee: Up to AED 10,000

8. Driving with an Expired Registration

Driving with an expired vehicle registration is a violation that can lead to the following penalties:

  • Fine: AED 500
  • Black Points: 4
  • Vehicle Impoundment: 7 days
