UAE Unveils AI-Powered Smart Car to Detect Visa Violations

The UAE’s roadways are getting a high-tech upgrade. The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Ports Security (ICP) has introduced a fully electric “smart inspection car” capable of identifying visa and residency violations using artificial intelligence and 360-degree imaging technology.

Equipped with six cameras strategically placed around the vehicle, the car offers full visual coverage and can capture facial images of people within approximately 10 metres. According to Faris Almaeeni, Foreign Affairs Systems Department Manager at ICP, the car integrates AI with a custom dashboard that presents heat maps and real-time alerts.

“It’s fully electrical. It has its own dashboard, and it’s working with the AI, so it gives you some heat maps,” said Almaeeni.

While the vehicle uses advanced automation to detect possible violators, it won’t be driverless. Human officers will still operate the car and review flagged cases directly on-screen.

“This is not fully automated,” Almaeeni clarified.

The smart inspection car is slated for deployment in early 2026, beginning in Dubai before expanding to other emirates. When a potential violation is detected—such as an expired or unlawful residency—the officer will verify the individual’s documents and handle the case through standard legal channels.

“The officer will go down and he will speak with him, and they will try to solve his issue with the being illegal in UAE,” Almaeeni added.

The initiative is part of ICP’s broader digital transformation strategy, showcased at GITEX 2025, aimed at modernizing inspection and immigration operations across the country.

With more than 32,000 visa violations flagged in the first half of 2025 alone, the ICP hopes this innovative system will speed up field inspections, reduce manual verification time, and boost enforcement efficiency across the UAE.
