Dubai Sets World Record for Lowest Power Outage in 2023

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has set a groundbreaking record in global power reliability, surpassing its own benchmark for the lowest electricity Customer Minutes Lost (CML). In 2023, DEWA achieved 1.06 minutes of outage per customer annually, breaking its previous record of 1.19 minutes in the preceding year.

Record-Breaking Performance

DEWA's achievement is noteworthy, accounting for less than .0002 percent of the entire 525,600 minutes in a year. In comparison, leading utility companies in the European Union record an average CML of around 15 minutes. Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA, attributes this success to the organization's commitment to innovation and efficient management of facilities and services through a smart and integrated grid.

Technological Advancements

DEWA credits its record-setting performance to the incorporation of Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies. These include Artificial Intelligence (AI), blockchain, energy storage, and the Internet of Things (IoT). Such technologies enable DEWA to provide electricity and water services at the highest standards of availability, reliability, efficiency, and sustainability.

Smart Grid Implementation

The AED7 billion ($1.91 billion) investment in DEWA's Smart Grid has played a pivotal role in this achievement. This sophisticated system employs automated decision-making capabilities and interoperability across the entire electricity and water network. The Smart Grid enhances DEWA's agility, resilience, and readiness to meet the rising demand for electricity and water in Dubai.
