Indian Artist Rouble Nagi Wins $1 Million Global Teacher Prize in Dubai

Indian artist and education innovator Rouble Nagi has been named the world’s best teacher, taking home the $1 million Global Teacher Prize at the World Governments Summit in Dubai.

The award was presented by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed, Crown Prince of Dubai, recognising Nagi’s work using art-based education to reach children in some of India’s most underserved communities.

Reaching Over a Million Children Through Art

Nagi’s projects have already impacted more than one million children, focusing on education access, skill-building, and keeping kids in school in marginalised areas.

Through her Rouble Nagi Art Foundation, she runs Misaal India, a low-cost education programme that blends art with learning across over 100 slums and villages. The approach has helped reduce dropout rates while giving children creative skills alongside classroom education.

From Slum Transformation to Classrooms

One of her most recognised initiatives, Misaal Mumbai, became India’s first large-scale slum transformation project. The project saw:

  • Over 155,000 homes painted

  • Improved sanitation and waterproofing

  • Community hygiene workshops for residents

The goal went beyond visuals—it was about creating healthier spaces that support learning and dignity.

A Teacher’s Dream, Recognised Globally

Speaking after receiving the award, Nagi said being a teacher had been her dream since childhood, adding that her biggest achievement is the love and trust of the children she works with. She highlighted education as the most powerful gift for every child, regardless of background or gender.

About the Global Teacher Prize

The Global Teacher Prize is funded by GEMS Education and honours educators making an exceptional global impact. Nagi’s win places the spotlight on creative education models that go beyond traditional classrooms.
