The brand sparked controversy after the launch of its new collection that appeared to many to take inspiration from the devastating situation in Gaza.

In the campaign titled “Collection 04_The Jacket,” Zara brings model Kristen McMenamy to pose alongside mannequins that are wrapped in white cloth and plastic. The brand explained how the new line intentionally looks the way it is to highlight the versatility of the garment. However, things did not sit well with social media users, with many seeing the images as unsettling due to elements such as rocks, rubble, and more importantly, a cardboard cutout that resembles an upside-down map of Palestine.

Zara has not issued a statement regarding the controversy yet, but this isn’t the first time the Spanish multinational brand has been faced with backlash regarding their covert support for Israel. Last year in October 2022, a campaign was launched by Palestinians to boycott the mammoth fashion company after its franchise holder in Israel, Joey Schwebel, met with Itamar Ben-Gvir, the head of the extremist Jewish Forces party, to offer their support to him in the Israeli elections.
