Begging in Dubai: Jail and Fines up to Dh500,000!

As Ramadan approaches, Dubai authorities are set to launch an anti-begging campaign starting April 13, 2024.

Offenders face a minimum Dh5,000 fine and up to three months' imprisonment. Colonel Saeed Al Qemzi of Dubai Police emphasized the detrimental impact of beggars exploiting people's compassion during Ramadan, branding it a threat to societal well-being. Penalties for organizing begging activities and bringing individuals from abroad include imprisonment for at least six months and a Dh100,000 fine.

The growing use of social media platforms for false charitable claims prompted authorities to enforce strict measures. Under the Information Technology Crime Law of 2012, violators face fines between Dh250,000 and Dh500,000. Residents were advised against giving money directly to beggars and encouraged to use official channels for charity.

Dubai Police highlighted the professional nature of begging, with over 1,700 beggars caught and punished from 2020 to 2023.

Residents were urged to report begging instances, utilizing the Dubai Police application or calling 901. Awareness efforts include panels, ATM screens, and 300 display screens across Union Co-op branches.

Friday prayer sermons and post-prayer lectures will further disseminate information on the consequences of begging. The comprehensive campaign seeks to ensure a secure and regulated charitable environment during the holy month.
