Rare Arabian Caracal Caught on Camera in Fujairah Mountains

A hidden gem of the UAE’s wildlife has made a surprise appearance. The Arabian caracal, one of the rarest wild cats in the region, was recently caught on motion-sensor cameras deep in Wadi Wurayah National Park in Fujairah.

This elusive cat is critically endangered, and its appearance marks a major milestone for conservationists working to protect it.

Only a Handful Left

Experts estimate there are fewer than 250 mature Arabian caracals left in the wild. Recognized by its sharp black ear tufts and muscular build, the caracal is a top predator that keeps mountain ecosystems in balance.

This latest sighting is just the third recorded since 2019, following rare appearances in Jebel Hafeet and Wadi Shees. Each one gives scientists crucial insight into how the species is surviving—and how to help it thrive again.

Caught on Camera

The footage was captured using motion-sensor trail cameras that monitor wildlife around the clock. According to the Fujairah Environment Authority, this proves the national park is more than just a scenic spot—it’s a vital refuge for endangered animals.

Conservation experts from Emirates Nature–WWF say the rediscovery isn’t just about biodiversity—it’s also a chance to spotlight eco-tourism and raise awareness of the UAE’s natural treasures.
