Rare Green Turtle Nest Spotted in Abu Dhabi

For the first time in Abu Dhabi, a green turtle nest was discovered in the Al Dhafra region during the annual turtle survey by the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD).

While green turtles are common in the region's waters, nesting activity has not been observed before. The discovery took place during a nocturnal survey, with the green sea turtle found nesting on an island known for small pocket beaches separated by rocky outcrops.

Abu Dhabi's waters host four of the seven marine turtle species globally, with Hawksbill and Green Turtles being predominant. The Al Dhafra Region, including islands such as Abu Al Abyadh and Bu Tinah, is a key area for spotting these turtles, providing rich seagrass beds, marine algae, and coral reef habitats.

Nesting occurs from mid-March to mid-June, with over 200 nests typically reported during this season. Hatching takes place between mid-June and early August. Female turtles are selective in choosing nesting sites, often scouting beaches for several nights before finding an ideal spot with soft sand away from human activity.
