Ajman Police Introduces 'Remote Bail' to Simplify Misdemeanor

An UAE resident faced an unexpected ordeal when she was detained at the airport upon returning from travel, informed that she was 'wanted' in Ajman. While her husband and children were permitted to proceed, she was held in police custody overnight and later transported to Ajman.

The incident was reportedly triggered by what seemed to be a 'simple' comment on another woman's Instagram post.

In a video shared by the Ajman Police, Lieutenant Colonel Dr. Mohammed bin Hazem Al Suwaidi described the scenario in detail. "She was shocked, her husband was shocked, and their children were confused. There was a report against her in Ajman, and they had to transport her to the emirate," he explained.

"She stayed in our command for a day, and then she was transferred to Ajman," Al Suwaidi continued. "This is a legal procedure. Then, if it's a case that allows for bail, she can be bailed out at the center or referred to the public prosecutor who will make a decision."

Following the transfer, she was released on bail. The entire situation stemmed from her comment on another woman's Instagram post, which inadvertently led to online bullying.

"She saw someone she knew who posted a photo with a bag. She commented that the bag was a knockoff. People who saw the comment started laughing and bullying the woman with the bag. So, she filed a report. Thankfully, eventually they were reconciled," Al Suwaidi recounted.

Remote Bail: Addressing Misdemeanours with Efficiency

An Instagram comment may seem trivial at first glance, but it has the potential to lead to serious consequences. To help prevent such situations, Ajman Police recently introduced a new initiative under their Zero Bureaucracy Program.

The 'Remote Bail' service was established through coordination with the Public Prosecution, aiming to simplify legal procedures. For cases categorized as misdemeanours, bail can now be granted remotely and electronically, saving time and reducing stress for all parties involved.

The initiative also serves as a reminder for residents about the importance of understanding the legal implications of online behavior. As stipulated by federal law on countering rumors and cybercrimes, violations can carry severe penalties, including imprisonment and fines ranging from Dh250,000 to Dh500,000, or one of these two punishments.

This case highlights the significance of responsible use of social media and the efficiency of new systems like 'Remote Bail,' which aim to balance justice with convenience.
