Arab Leaders Discuss New Iran-US deal at G7 in France

Arab leaders met on Tuesday at the G7 summit in France to discuss the Iran-US agreement announced earlier this week.

President Sheikh Mohamed was welcomed by the hosts at Hotel Royal in Evian-les-Bains, a spa town near the Swiss border.

The UAE President was due to attend a lunch on Middle East stability with G7 leaders, alongside Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El Sisi and Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim.

The talks came after US President Donald Trump said the Iran-US agreement would allow the full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz by Friday.

The deal was signed electronically by Donald Trump, US Vice President JD Vance and Iranian Parliamentary Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf.

Trump said details of the agreement could be shared after a meeting in Geneva on Friday, which is expected to start wider talks on Iran's nuclear programme over the next 60 days.

Speaking with French President Emmanuel Macron, the G7 host, shortly after arriving at the summit, Trump said demining operations had started in the Strait of Hormuz.

France is seeking approval from the US and Iran to launch a defensive operation in the strait to help protect merchant ships. The UK is also co-leading an international naval coalition of around 50 countries to secure the key waterway.

Trump said it was “not a bad idea to have a ship or two up here from a few countries”. He added: “I don’t think we’re going to need much help because we’ll have an agreement where it’s going to be open and it’s toll-free.”
