Dubai is Using Drones to Clean Traffic Lights — and It’s Way Faster

Dubai is once again putting tech to work on its streets. The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has started testing drones to clean traffic signals, aiming to replace manlifts and heavy equipment with something quicker and safer.

And early results? Pretty impressive.

Faster cleaning, less hassle

During pilot tests at the Marrakech–Rabat Street junction, drones managed to clean traffic signals in half the usual time. One side of a signal took just three to four minutes, cutting overall cleaning time by up to 50 per cent.

That means fewer lane disruptions and less waiting around for drivers.

Safer for workers, easier on the roads

By using drones, the RTA removes the need for workers to operate at heights using bulky machinery. This significantly improves safety and keeps traffic moving smoothly during maintenance.

The goal is simple: get the job done without putting people — or drivers — at risk.

Lower costs and greener operations

The pilot also showed cost savings of up to 15 per cent, with the potential to reach 25 per cent as the technology improves. On top of that, drone cleaning uses less fuel and water, helping cut emissions linked to traditional cleaning methods.

It’s a win for efficiency and sustainability.

What’s next

According to the RTA, testing will continue as teams fine-tune the process, maintain strict safety standards, and make sure drone operations don’t affect traffic flow.

If the results keep trending up, don’t be surprised if drones become a regular sight at Dubai’s intersections.
