Dubai's Al Maktoum Airport Expansion Remains on Track Despite US-Iran War

Plans for Al Maktoum Airport's (DWC) first phase of expansion remain fully on track to be completed on its original timeline, Dubai Airports CEO Paul Griffiths has confirmed, dispelling concerns that recent global uncertainties may have impacted the megaproject.

In a LinkedIn post on Friday, June 12, Griffiths directly addressed speculation about whether recent events had altered Dubai's long-term aviation strategy. "Over the past few weeks, I have been asked several times whether recent events have changed our long-term plans for aviation in Dubai," he wrote. "The answer is simple: no."

Vision Unchanged Despite Uncertainty

Griffiths, who oversees both DWC and Dubai International Airport (DXB), emphasized that the new airport's vision will remain "firmly on track" with ambitions untouched.

"Throughout my career, I have learned that moments of uncertainty come and go," he said. "What matters is maintaining the confidence to keep investing, keep building and keep looking ahead. That is exactly what Dubai has always done, and exactly what we will continue to do."

Expansion Details

While passenger operations at Al Maktoum Airport opened in 2013, the facility is now undergoing a significant second phase of expansion designed to withstand 150 million passengers annually. The first phase of this expansion is scheduled for completion by 2032, after which it will begin gradually taking over all flight operations from the currently busier Dubai International Airport (DXB).

Confidence in Aviation Sector

Griffiths expressed strong confidence in the future of Dubai's aviation sector, stating his belief remains "as strong as ever" despite any external challenges. The assurance comes amid broader regional and global shifts that have prompted questions about major infrastructure projects across the aviation industry.

The confirmation marks a significant milestone for Dubai's long-term urban planning strategy, positioning DWC as the cornerstone of the emirate's aviation future while allowing DXB to transition into other roles once the transfer is complete.

Industry analysts view the confirmation as a positive signal for investor confidence in Dubai's continued commitment to its strategic position as a global aviation hub.
