Ramadan Sweets: How to Prepare Umm Ali

Umm Ali is an ancient Egyptian sweet from the Ayyubid era, and was named after the ruler's wife. It is one of the many traditional Arabic sweets that people prepare and enjoy during Ramadan.

Ingredients

8 pieces of 600g croissants, medium size, cut into small portions. 3 tablespoons of raisins. 3 tablespoons of dried coconut. 3 tablespoons of roasted almonds. 3 tablespoons of crushed pistachios. 1 packet or 397g of sweetened condensed milk. 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract. 4 cups of water. 1 cup of liquid whipped cream.

How to prepare

  • Add the shredded croissant to the raisins, coconut, almonds and pistachios in a baking bowl.
  • Put the sweetened condensed milk, vanilla and water in a large saucepan, bring the ingredients to a boil, then remove from the heat. Pour the previous mixture directly over the craissant mixture in the baking dish and set it aside for 5 minutes or until the craissant pieces absorb the largest amount of liquid possible.

  •  Put the whipped cream into a pastry bag, then squeeze the cream over the prepared mixture into a baking dish.
  • Place the bread plate in a preheated oven at 200 degrees Celsius with the use of the grill and cook the dish for 5 minutes or until the face becomes golden and served directly.

You can add caramel, chocolate and any other type of nuts you like while baking Umm Ali sweets in the oven.
